Ban Houayxay (Lao: ຫ້ວຍ ຊາຍ), also called Huay Xai is the capital of Bokeo province in Laos. The town lies on the Mekong River opposite Chiang Khong in Thailand. 

This is the northernmost border crossing between Laos and Thailand and is called the gateway to Indo-China called.

You can only cross the river by small boats or by small ferries. Most tourist arrive by the slow boat from Thailand.

The Mekong river plays an important role in transporting people and goods in the area of Huay Xai.


The mainstreet offers enough guesthouses and small restaurants for tourist passing by with the slow boat to Luang Prabang.

The Nam Ha National Park is located on the route from Huay Xai to Phouka Vieng to Luang Namtha and beyond.

If  want to go to this national park you can take public transportation to one of the two above places.

The river flows along Pakbeng, Luang Prabang and other major cities. On behalf of Laos, China is working here at Huay Xai to a paved road (road number 3), the Chinese province of Yunnan to build.

The city of Luang Namtha serves as a starting point.

Huay Xai has a small airport with flights towards Luang Prabang and the capital of Laos, Vientiane.
